PURE Bioscience SDC-Based Disinfectants Included on EPA List of Antimicrobials Effective against 2009 H1N1 Flu Strain
SAN DIEGO, Calif., May 1, 2009 – PURE Bioscience (NASDAQ: PURE), creators of the patented silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC) antimicrobial, announced that its commercialized SDC-based disinfectants are included on the list published today by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of antimicrobial products effective against the 2009 H1N1 flu strain based on their effectiveness against other influenza A virus strains.
The EPA publication stated that the EPA registers pesticide products, including disinfectants. As part of the registration process, the EPA evaluates the product efficacy to make sure the public health label claims are accurate.
The publication also noted that the EPA believes, based on available scientific information, that the currently registered influenza A virus products will be effective against the 2009-H1N1 flu strain and other influenza A virus strains on hard, non-porous surfaces. The EPA notice also reminds end users to always follow label instructions, paying special attention to the product’s dilution rate (if applicable) and contact time to ensure safe and effective use of these products, and to confirm that the product is labeled specifically for the site on which it will be used such as: hospitals, healthcare facilities, schools, offices or homes.
Disinfectants containing PURE’s SDC antimicrobial also meet the recommendation by the CDC for infection control of H1N1 in both home and healthcare settings. Guidance published by the CDC on April 24, 2009 for infection control in healthcare settings advises that “disinfection strategies used during influenza seasons can be applied to the environmental management of swine influenza.” Additional guidance published on April 25, 2009 for infection control in the home recommends keeping “surfaces (especially bedside tables, surfaces in the bathroom, and toys for children) clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant according to directions on the product label.”
Disinfectants using PURE’s SDC-based antimicrobial have been registered by the EPA specifically for use on children’s toys, cribs, high chairs and other sensitive areas of the home as well as for use on hard surfaces in multitudes of environments, including hospitals, schools and offices.
Michael L. Krall, President and CEO of PURE Bioscience, stated, “The recent publication by the EPA further confirms that disinfectant products using PURE’s SDC-based antimicrobial, available under many private brands, are effective disinfectant choices during this current outbreak. Our distributors are responding regionally, nationally and internationally to deliver product to help stem the spread of H1N1. Should the current outbreak become pandemic, PURE has the manufacturing capability to aggressively react not only in the US but also abroad to supply our powerful disinfectant to governments, healthcare institutions and consumers seeking to effectively stem the spread of swine flu.”
PURE Bioscience’s broad spectrum SDC-based disinfectant completely eliminates bacteria, viruses and fungi and is registered with the EPA under the trade name Axen30. It is sold through a variety of distributors under more than a dozen private label brands. Independent lab studies and resulting EPA-registered claims document that PURE’s disinfectant kills resistant strains of bacteria, including MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), CA-MRSA, PVL-MRSA and VRE (Vancomycin resistant Enterococcus faecium) in just 2 minutes. In addition, SDC-based disinfectants provide a 30-second kill and 24-hour residual protection against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella choleraesuis. Notable viral efficacy claims for PURE’s disinfectant include a 3-minute kill against Human Corona virus (SARS surrogate) and Rotavirus and a 10-minute kill against Norovirus, Human Influenza A and Avian Influenza A (Bird Flu). Moreover, SDC-based disinfectants are odorless, colorless, non-corrosive, non-flammable and are compatible with other disinfecting and cleaning chemicals.
