PURE Bioscience Reaffirms Commitment to Providing Safe Drinking Water in Africa: Cooperative Project with BioTech Medical, LLC Focused on Delivering SDC Solution

Two Ounces of Silver-Based Formula Treat 200 Gallons of Water

SAN DIEGO, Calif., April 22, 2009 – PURE Bioscience (NASDAQ: PURE) announced today that it is working cooperatively with its distributor, BioTech Medical LLC, and several African countries to improve the quality of water with a new silver-based formula.

The technology, a proprietary new molecule created with ionic silver stabilized in citric acid, named silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC), is found to be safe, tasteless, and odorless and could eliminate the threat of dangerous water-born bacteria, such as cholera, which are prevalent in African countries.  Initial testing concluded that as little as two ounces of SDC could treat 200 gallons of water in just minutes with no harm to the environment and no toxic side effects.

Andrea L. Goren, Executive Director of BioTech Medical LLC, said, “Compared with traditional antimicrobial chemicals, SDC has superior efficacy and reduced toxicity while mitigating the potential for microbial resistance.  We are passionate about raising health standards through the distribution of SDC-based product, and we are proud to participate with PURE Bioscience in this critically important early-stage project.”

Globally, one billion people are without access to adequate water supply and 2.5 billion lack basic sanitation, leaving millions to die every year from otherwise preventable water-related diseases. Sanitation coverage is lowest in sub-Saharan Africa, where two-thirds of people do not have access to improved sanitation. For water, coverage remains below 60 per cent of the population in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Michael L. Krall, President and CEO of PURE Bioscience, said, “We are committed to helping Least Developed Countries in Africa and elsewhere improve the quality of their sanitation and drinking water.  People living in rural areas are far less likely to have access to improved water and sanitation facilities than their urban compatriots.  PURE Bioscience offers a cost-effective solution for developing countries that, once fully developed, could jump-start sanitation and drinking water supplies for these areas, thus providing a base for economic growth.  We believe this is the first step for Least Developed Countries to transform into developed countries.

“Although this appears to be a long-term project for PURE, we are motivated to move as quickly as possible to deliver our SDC solution to people who need it most.” concluded Krall.

The water treatment formula is neither registered nor offered for sale in the United States.
