Green Antimicrobial Technology with a Punch!

Silver Dihydrogen Citrate Offers Earth-Friendly Alternative to Toxic Antimicrobials

SAN DIEGO, CA April 22, 2008— To emphasize its commitment to provide “green” non-toxic and effective antimicrobial technologies, in honor of Earth Day, PURE Bioscience (NASDAQ: PURE) recapped the variety of applications for which its patented silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC) technology is increasingly being adopted for consumer and industrial use.

Michael L. Krall, President and CEO of PURE Bioscience, stated, “PURE is proud to be among the early leaders as society is demanding “green” alternatives for a variety of uses and applications.  All in our company are gratified that our technology sacrifices nothing in terms of effectiveness while still meeting the goal of being earth friendly. We provide much needed protection from today’s ‘superbugs’ while remaining environmentally aware and safe - a rare combination.”

PURE’s technology is currently being used and developed for a wide variety of applications including:

  • As the first new disinfectant active ingredient approved by the EPA in more than 30 years, and with the lowest possible toxicity rating, SDC-based disinfectants are ideal for closed population protection.  SDC-based disinfectants are successfully being used on a regular basis in prisons and schools to eradicate outbreaks of dangerous superbugs such as MRSA.  The Tulsa County Jail has been MRSA free for 21 months with the use of the disinfectant, following an early incidence trend of approximately 12 cases per month.
  • PURE has contracted with Rockline Industries-- the industry leader in contract wet wipe manufacturing-- the exclusive right to develop and commercialize wet wipes containing SDC for private label markets.
  • The SDC-based disinfectant was selected among the innovative new products designated as “Best of Show” by a distinguished panel of judges from SpaFinder, at the 2008 Los Angeles Spa and Resort Expo and Medical Aesthetics Conference because its ionic silver technology is tough enough to rapidly kill a broad range of pathogens, yet gentle enough for daily use by spa personnel without masks or gloves.  It is colorless and odorless but is a powerful weapon against a long list of microorganisms without promoting bacterial resistance.
  • A concentrated SDC disinfectant formulation, Cruise Control™ is designed to be mixed with water at the point of use to create a revolutionary hard surface antimicrobial.  Cruise Control is being marketed to the cruise ship industry, which in recent years has suffered significant economic and reputation damage as a result of common and well-publicized outbreaks of norovirus, or “stomach flu.”
  • PURE, along with various development partners, is exploring additional uses for SDC, including agricultural, industrial, preservative, food processing, water treatment and pharmaceutical applications.

“Powered by SDC™”

PURE Bioscience’s flagship technology is a patented, aqueous non-toxic antimicrobial called silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC). SDC is an electrolytically generated source of stabilized ionic silver that can serve as the basis for a broad range of products in diverse markets.  SDC is the first new disinfectant active to be registered by the EPA in more than 30 years, and “Powered by SDC” disinfectants combine extraordinary broad spectrum antimicrobial action with a previously unattainable safety profile.  PURE also manufactures and sells varying strengths of SDC concentrate as an active ingredient, additive or preservative for inclusion in third-party products.

About PURE Bioscience

PURE Bioscience (PURE) develops and markets technology-based bioscience products that provide solutions to numerous global health challenges. PURE's proprietary high efficacy/low toxicity bioscience technologies, including its silver dihydrogen citrate-based antimicrobials, represent innovative advances in diverse markets and lead today's global trend toward industry and consumer use of "green" products while providing competitive advantages in efficacy and safety.  PURE’s flagship technology, silver dihydrogen citrate (SDC), is an electrolytically generated source of stabilized ionic silver. A patented new molecular entity, SDC is distinguished from competitors because of its superior efficacy, reduced toxicity and the inability of bacteria to become resistant to it.  PURE produces and markets ready-to-use EPA-registered disinfectant products, as well as varying strengths of SDC concentrate as an active ingredient, additive or preservative for inclusion in third-party products. PURE also pursues development programs for SDC as an active pharmaceutical ingredient in a variety of pharmaceutical products.
